HONORING FORMER CITY COUNCILMEMBER HADI
MONSEF FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY OF
ALAMEDA
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Alameda records its appreciation for
the many years of outstanding service faithfully rendered by Hadi Monsef; and
WHEREAS, Hadi Monsef was appointed to the City Council on May, 17, 1983;
and
WHEREAS, running under the campaign slogan "Honesty, Authority, Dedication,
and Integrity (HADI)," Hadi Monsef was elected to the City Council on April 16, 1985
where he served until April 18, 1989 and served as Vice Mayor from May, 1985 to May,
1987; and
WHEREAS, while on City Council Hadi Monsef was the chief advocate for the
establishment of a strategic planning process for the City as well as the non-smoking
ordinance which banned smoking in enclosed buildings and places of work; and
WHEREAS, after his time on the City Council Hadi Monsef continued his
voluntary public service as an active liaison between the City and the U.S. Navy League
of Alameda, where he was instrumental in having Alameda designated as a "Coast
Guard City" in April, 2006; and
WHEREAS, Hadi Monsef was a founding member of Girls Inc. of the Island
City, which celebrates its 50th year of empowering girls to realize their potential and
exercise their rights and gifts; and
WHEREAS, Hadi Monsef served on the Rhythmix Cultural Works Community
Advisory Board, promoting cultural awareness and encouraging community growth;
and
WHEREAS, Hadi Monsef was a distinguished Rotarian who served as Rotary
International District Governor, where he oversaw approximately 60 clubs working with
youth, helping the Alameda community, and playing a significant role in international
and world community service; and
WHEREAS, as an "elder statesman" of the City, Hadi Monsef served as a key,
advisor and sounding board to Mayor Marie Gilmore , City Manager John Russo, and
former Mayor Beverly Johnson; and
WHEREAS, Hadi Monsef will be remembered as a true gentleman, a sharp
dresser, a terrific Persian cook, an avid bocce ball player, and a paradigm of local
volunteerism and service to the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Alameda
does hereby express sincere gratitude for the life and legacy of Hadi Monsef, whose
departure is felt by many in our community. The leadership and graciousness of Hadi
Monsef will be missed by all.
1, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and
regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in a regular
meeting assembled on the 18th day of November, 2014, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Chen, Daysog, Ezzy Ashcraft, Tam and
Mayor Gilmore — 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
