Resolution 15731CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 15731
COMMENDING JIM ODDIE FOR SIX YEARS OF SERVICE TO
THE CITY OF ALAMEDA AS COUNCILMEMBER
Whereas, Jim Oddie's love for the City of Alameda began when he chose to raise
his family here and began serving the Alameda community as a volunteer member of the
Parcel Tax Advisory Committee for Alameda's public schools, and later as a member of
Alameda Hospital's Finance and Management Committee, and the City of Alameda's
Open Government Commission; and
Whereas, Jim Oddie served as an elected City Councilmember for six years, from
2014-2018 and from 2018-2020. During his tenure, Councilmember Oddie was very
vocal on topics of importance to him, which included advocating to increase the minimum
wage, and submitting Council Referrals regarding sanctuary city, gun control, and a
flavored tobacco ban; and
Whereas, during his current Council term Councilmember Oddie represented the
City on several regional agency boards, including StopWaste, the City of Alameda
Healthcare District Subcommittee, and the Airport Noise Management Forum; and
Whereas, Councilmember Oddie served as District Director to Assemblymember
Rob Bonta during which time he was instrumental in expanding the City's relationship
with other Statewide elected officials; and
Whereas, Councilmember Oddie prioritized public safety in Alameda, working to
establish the state-of-the-art Emergency Operations Center, maintaining 911 response
times, and supporting the Community Paramedicine Program; and
Whereas, Councilmember Oddie also prioritized protecting Alameda's most
vulnerable residents, refusing to allow individuals to be defined by their socioeconomic
status, and fighting for racial equity by introducing a Resolution declaring racism a public
health emergency and supporting ongoing actions to address institutional community
racism; and
Whereas, Councilmember Oddie worked tirelessly to keep people in their homes
through tenant protections, including establishing rent control in Alameda and ending "no
cause" evictions, developing affordable housing that provides everyone the opportunity
to achieve homeownership, and creating compassionate solutions for our unhoused
neighbors; and
Whereas, Councilmember Oddie cares deeply about Alameda's business
community and worked to lift up our local businesses and business associations during
good times and protect them from the devastating impacts from COVID-19; and
Whereas, Councilmember Oddie supported expanding Alameda's physical spaces
for community members to enjoy, including Jean Sweeney Open Space Park and
introducing an implementation plan to create a shoreline ecological park on the west side
of Seaplane Lagoon at Alameda Point, commonly known as De -Pave Park; and
Whereas, Councilmember Oddie helped constituents solve problems and worked
to maintain a high quality of life for all Alamedans. Councilmember Oddie also took great
pleasure in attending City events, including the Unity Picnic, 4th of July Parade and
Holiday Tree Lighting, and representing the City of Alameda during overseas visits to our
Sister Cities; and
Whereas, Councilmember Oddie was instrumental in adopting City policies that
focus on the values of inclusion, dignity for all, compassion, housing as a human right,
and protecting the environment.
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the City Council of the City of Alameda hereby
express its sincere appreciation to Jim Oddie for his decades of service to the Alameda
community.
Now, therefore be it further resolved that the City Council of the City of Alameda
does hereby congratulate Jim Oddie on his many accomplishments while serving the City
of Alameda where he earned the respect of both colleagues and constituents.
