HONORING JOHN KNOX WHITE'S SERVICE TO THE CITY OF ALAMEDA
WHEREAS, on December 20, 2022, Councilmember John Knox White will attend his last
meeting as a City Councilmember after serving the City of Alameda for more than 20 years. John
is known for being a strategic problem solver who has earned the respect of many elected officials,
business leaders, and community members; and
WHEREAS, John Knox White served on the Transportation Commission from 2002-2009,
the Sunshine Ordinance Task Force in 2010, and the Planning Board from 2012-2017. During his
tenure on the Planning Board, John Knox White helped shape major City projects, including
redevelopment of the former Alameda Naval Air Station (now Alameda Point), development of
Alameda Landing and Alameda Marina, and the Park Street North of Lincoln Avenue form -based
codes; and
WHEREAS, John Knox White served on the City Council from 2019-2022, was Vice Mayor
from 2019-2020, and represented the City on the Alameda - AC Transit Liaison Committee and
the AUSD - City Liaison Committee, and was a member of the City Charter Review Sub-
committee; and
WHEREAS, John Knox White was one of the original members of Bike Walk Alameda and
has been a staunch advocate for transportation safety, calling for the adoption of Alameda's
Vision Zero Policy, and championing improved bicycle and pedestrian safety and access,
including the addition of bike lanes across the island, and pedestrian access to commercial areas;
and
WHEREAS, John Knox White's legacy includes helping draft the City's Sunshine
Ordinance, supporting adoption of the City's General Plan, Housing Element, Climate Action and
Resiliency Plan, Active Transportation Plan, and Vision Zero Action Plan; helping Alameda's most
vulnerable residents as a former board member of Alameda Point Collaborative, and by
advocating for the Wellness Center; increasing affordable housing availability, expanding
economic development; addressing gun violence; declaring racism a public health emergency;
and condemning increased incidents of bias, racism, discrimination, violence toward Asian -
Americans and Pacific Islanders, and anti-Semitism; and
WHEREAS, John Knox White cares deeply about Alameda, having raised his family here,
and serving as a trusted progressive voice, bringing people together in meaningful ways, and
working to make the City a more equitable, vibrant, and welcoming place.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Alameda City Council and City staff
thank John Knox White for his years of service and commend him for the lasting impact he will
have on the City. While his passion and compassion will be missed, he leaves Alameda a better
place than he found it.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly
adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in a regular meeting assembled
on the 20th day of December 2022, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Daysog, Herrera Spencer, Vella and Mayor
Ezzy Ashcraft — 4.
