Resolution 16200 CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 16200
SUPPORTING PROPOSITION 3, THE RIGHT TO MARRY, AND
REPEAL PROPOSITION 8 AMENDMENT ON THE NOVEMBER 5,
2024 BALLOT
WHEREAS, Proposition 3 amends the California Constitution to recognize the
fundamental right to marry, regardless of sex or race, and removes language in the
California Constitution stating that marriage is only between a man and a woman; and
WHEREAS, according to the Legislative Analyst's Office, a yes vote on this
measure means: Language in the California Constitution would be updated to match who
can currently marry. There would be no change in who can marry. A no vote means:
Language in the California Constitution would not be changed. There would be no change
in who can marry; and
WHEREAS, final votes cast by the State Legislature were unanimous in support
of Proposition 3; and
WHEREAS, Proposition 3 is supported by Equality California, American Civil
Liberties Union of Northern California, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, the
California Democratic Party, and Governor Gavin Newsom; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda supports legislation that promotes social equity
and enhances the quality of life and health of Alameda residents; and
WHEREAS, in 2008, 62% of Alameda County residents opposed passing
Proposition 8, which was later ruled unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Alameda
that the Council hereby supports Proposition 3 on the November 2024 ballot.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and
regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in a regular meeting
assembled on the 17th day of September 2024, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Daysog, Herrera Spencer, Jensen, Vella
and Mayor Ezzy Ashcraft— 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
