EVE N ING, MAY 7 TH, 1918.
The meeting convened at 8:10 P. M. with Council-president Majors presiding.
The roll was called and Councilmen. Latham, Noy, Otis , Probst, and President
Majors, (5) were noted present .
The minutes of the regular meeting of April 16th, 1918 were approved as
rend.
The Minutes of the adjourned regular meeting of April 23rd, 1918, were
approved as read.
The Minutes of the adjourned regular meeting of May 3rd were approved as
read.
The following were received:
The AuditorTs Balance Sheet for the month of April, 1918. Ordered filed.
1. `' The oath of office of Burnett Hamilton as Street Superintendent and City
Engineer. Ordered filed.
2. The oath of office of Mrs. Helen A. Cross as member of the Board of
Education. Ordered filed.
The following communications were received:
3. From the Ralph Shipbuilding Company amending its application for the
closing of streets in the City of Alameda heretofore filed, by omitting the
closing of the easterly half of V alnut Street. Referred to the City Manager.
4. From the United States Railroad Administration acknowledging receipt
of the copy of Resolution No. 129 , which requested the construction of the
bridge across the Estuary. Ordered filed.
5. From Mrs. Mary Coles, requesting a gratuitous license for a dog
and from Hnnry Alexander requesting a gratuitous license to sell fish from
a wagon. As both bore the endorsement of rr`. 0. Jacoby, Chief of Police and
City Manager, Charles E. Hewes , Mr. Probst moved that the requests be granted,
seconded by Mr. Latham and carried.
A Bill entitled
"A Bill

Providing for the Acquiring by the City of
Alameda of Certain Real Property for the
Use and Benefit of the Public Schools of
Said City."
came up for Passage and was laid over to the next meeting of the Council.
6. / City Manager Hewes stated that Harrison S. Robinson had been appointed by
the City of Oakland and the County of Alameda to represent thesebod s e.t a hear-
ing to be held before the Secretary of Par and Director General of Railroads
relative to the construction of the new bascule bridge across the Estuary end
that it was advisable that the City of Al medaappoint him in a similar capacity.
7. Mr. Probst introduced the following Resolution and moved its adoption:
"Resolution No. 132.
Appointing Harrison S. Robinson to Represent the
City of Alameda at the Hearings Before the

Secretary of War and the Director General of
Railroads on the Subject of the Construction of
the Bascule Bridge Across the Estuary."

by ?;'r. Otis end on roll call the resolution was adopted and passed unanimously.
8. City Manager Hewes brought before the Council the request of the Pacific
Coast Borax Company for the closing of Brush Street and recommended that the
street be closed, provided that the attendant expenses be paid for by the Borax
Company. Mr. Otis moved that the recommendation be adopted, seconded by Mr.
Probst and carried.
City Manager Hewes brought up the subject of the closing of Mulberry
Street and Atlantic Avenue as requested by the Ralph Shipbuilding Company.
A recess of ten minutes was taken and upon reconvening Councilmen Latham,Noy,
Otis, Probst, and Pres ' ( ent Majors , ( 5) were noted present . Absent :None .
9. Mr. Otis moved that the closing of the streets as requested by the Rolph
Shipbuilding Company be left with the City I,lanager, seco .ded by Mr . Probst and
carried.
10. , Resolution of Intention providing for the opening, widening and extending
of Clement Avenue was laid over to the next Committee of the Thole meeting of the
Council.
11. City Manager Hewes called attention to the advisability of purchasing Palm
Beach as an extension to Washington Park in order that additional recreational
facilities could be provided for the west end. Mr . Latham moved that the City
Manager investigate the details fully and report back at the next meeting of the
Council, seconded by Mr. Noy and carried.
Mr . Probst moved that when the Council adjourn, it adjourn to meet in
adjourned regular session, Tuesday evening, May 14th, 1918, at 8 o 'clock,
seconded by Mr. Latham and carried.
Claims against the General Fund amounting to 05,983,86; against the Police
Fund amounting to $92.17; against the Fire Fund amounting to $488.49; against the
Health Fund amounting to 055.22; against the Street Fund amounting to 02158.93;
against the Relief Fund amounting to $24.82; against the Recreation Fund amounting
to $213.25; against the Park Fund amounting to 0274.62; against the Electric Light
Fund amounting to 07106.01; and against the Store Fund amounting to 0106.09, having
been approved and audited by the proper officials were listed by the Clerk as
