Dear IN'A ra,P. • 1ThrValeLY Zc i& GAJ .
My name is Patricia Cartwright. 1 have lived in. Alameda since
Nineteen Seventy. I raised my three children here; my son
remained to raise his own son here as well. T own five rental
properties on the island; the two largest comprising
fifty -two units on Buena Vista Avenue, the Bonanza Apartments.
I wish to protest, in the strongest possible terms, the idea
of bringing rent control to Alameda.
One need only look at neighboring Berkeley to see the host
of ills that it brings. Property owners are forced to watch
in helpless frustration as the value of their investments is
degraded by vandalism, graffitti, abuse, and neglect by
problem tennants whom they cannot evict because of rent
control. I used to own rental property in Berkeley; I do not
care to now. In years past, the problems became so over-
whelming, that many owners simply abandoned the properties
involved. And, the tension and acrimony which have come to.
characterize !.ennant /landlord relations in the present are
widely viewedI throughout the Bay Area as a model of some -
thing to be avoided at all cost. Something no reasonable,
civic - minded Jerson anywhere would want for the city where
they live.
1 wish to reserve Alameda as a desirable place in which
to live, work, and raise children. 1 will oppose rent control
in Alameda b I all means available to me, and exhort my friends,
family, acquaintances, and the local merchants with whom 1
do business #±o do the same.
Vera sincerely Yours,
Patricia Cartwright,
