Public Works Dept.
Dear Barbara,
Per the article in the Journal today, it's our understanding that the City has applied for a large
federal grant for the purchase of non - advertising bus shelters. Addditionally, Public Works has
created proposed guidelines for the design of bus shelters which are to be presented to the
City Council this evening.
Regarding the grant proposal, ARTS(Alamedans for Responsible Transit Shelters) commends
the City for seeking these funds and truly hope the grant request will be successful.
If the City is successful, perhaps ARTS might still be able to augment the shelters, by
perhaps. being able to install some benches separate from the shelters. At previous public
meetings it was noteworthy how many people asked simply for benches.
If , however, the grant does not come through, and if the City would still like to discuss bus
shelters with ARTS, we will certainly be willing to do so. However, in that case, may we
suggest that the bus shelter guidelines should include some leeway when dealing with a non-
profit.
In other words, the 6 shelters that ARTS previously purchased were significantly less
expensive than the steel paint, powdercoated shelters presently installed on Park and Webster
St..As a non - profit, we are obligated to maximize our funds and to consider economics as well
as function.
Therefore, we would think it perhaps wise to include some language in the guidelines which
would allow for flexibility on the part of Public Works if and when you are engaging with a non-
profit such as ARTS for the purchase of bus shelters for the benefit of the community.
Of course it is obvious that ARTS is adament that bus shelters, benches etc.. should be non -
advertising. This is also for the benefit of our lovely and special community.
Thank you and the City Council for your consideration,

Dear Barry,
It was very nice speaking with you today regarding the proposed bus shelter design
standards topic planned for tonight's city council meeting. I have also read most of the
memorandum published on the web site regarding the topic. As the Executive Director of the
Community of Harbor Bay Isle I can certainly understand the City's desire to avoid an
onerous maintenance burden while providing the necessary functional shelters. I believe
that you and I must deal with very similar issues such as this dichotomy often!
This being the case, I want to reiterate the need of the Community of Harbor Bay Isle to
be involved in the aesthetic choices made for bus shelters in our Community. Volunteers
here were instrumental in this effort during the last installation of bus shelters and
would like to continue to ensure that architectural standards throughout our Community are
maintained. I apologize for not being available to attend tonight's meeting and voice this
request in person, but appreciate your help by making this known at the meeting.
Once again, thank you for your information on the phone and your help tonight. I will
follow up with you tomorrow to see what the next steps are and how we here at the
Community of Harbor Bay Isle can help the City of Alameda meet its goals and.. ours .
Sincerely,
Jen D. Crook

Subject: Fwd: Boatworks Appeal - We Support Estuary Park!
»> "Joan Breslin" <joanbreslin a msn.com> 4/3/2007 8:24 AM »>
My husband and 1 own our home at 2045 Eagle Avenue. We are writing to you
today to communicate our support for EPAC, the plan to create a 10 acre
Estuary Park along Clement Street's water side, as well as limiting the
number of new development units in accordance with Measure A.
We love our neighborhood. We enjoy living by the Marina /Estuary. We even
enjoy the mixed use nature of this area. However, a healthy balance must be
preserved. Boatworks intent will not enhance the spirit of this wonderful
neighborhood. An expansive Estuary Park would. It would benefit all
Alamedans - old and young. As parents of two boys (John 3, and Gabriel 2)
we are particularly eager for more safe, open spaces in this area to share
and enjoy.
Thank you for considering our hopes that you will reject Boatwork's latest
appeal.
