• Original windows were removed, the bottoms bricked in and short, metal windows inserted

• The functionless shed roof remnants have been removed and a larger cornice installed
• The neutral base and subtle trim colors work well with neighboring buildings
• Awnings selected to work with the building colors now grace the windows

• The current signage reflects a closed business
• The design of the awning was providing inadvertent pigeon housing because of a bottom "floor" that
wrapped back into the building.

• New signage is appropriate to the style of the building and calls out the name of the restaurant
• The sign uses "halo- lighting" technology and has a soft glow at night inviting diners into this upscale Italian
restaurant.

• There is no signage in the sign board area designed for the building (bottom left)
• The shop has the potential for "graphic" signage, i.e., signage that reflects the shop's trade such as a coin

window.
• As a result, the shop now has a higher level of visibility on the street

Paul's Newsstand on Park - BEFORE
• The Newsstand was covered up by redwood siding in the 1950s.
• The building is not level; there is no signage to call out the name of this important Alameda landmark.
• An electric meter sits on the back of the building, unsafely pulling power from the intersection traffic light.

• The Newsstand has been uncovered and the original
lapboard siding revealed, repaired and repainted in
historic colors.
• The building is now level and sitting on a rot- resistant
foundation.
• The building bears signage on the roof top which was
restored to the original roof line during rehabilitation.
• Power is now safely and legally provided.
• This year, the project was honored with a Pres-
ervation Award by the Alameda Architectural
Preservation Society.
