Resolution 14534CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. X53 COMMENDING BEVERLY J. JOHNSON FOR EIGHT YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE CITY OF ALAMEDA AS MAYOR WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson, a fourth - generation Alamedan, began her long and illustrious career of public service when she joined the City of Alameda Planning Board in 1995; and WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson was first elected to the Alameda City Council on November 3, 1998, and served as Councilmember until December 17, 2002; and WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson was elected as Mayor of the City of Alameda on November 5, 2002, was re- elected on November 7, 2000; and served as Mayor until December 21, 2010; and WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson was re- elected to the Alameda City Council on November 2, 2010; and WHEREAS, during her time as a Councilmember and as Mayor, Beverly J. Johnson ably represented the City on a wide range of important regional agency boards, including the A.C. Transit Inter- Agency Liaison Committee, the Airport Noise Forum, the Alameda County Airport Land Use Commission, the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency, the Alameda County Lead Abatement Joint Powers Authority; the Alameda County Transportation Improvement Authority, the Alameda County Waste Management Authority, the East Bay Regional Communications System Authority, the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority, and the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission; and WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson also served as the President of the Alameda County Mayors' Conference in Fiscal Year 2009 -2010; and WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson worked tirelessly as a member of the Alameda City Council /Alameda Unified School District Board Joint Subcommittee to seek ways to partner with the School District for the good of the community; and WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson further demonstrated her commitment to the youth of Alameda by co- chairing the Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth and Their Families and presiding over the establishment of the City's Youth Commission; and WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson was instrumental in ensuring the successful development of the awarding - winning Historic Alameda Theatre, as well as the Cineplex and Civic Center Garage, which have helped to revitalize the now - vibrant Park Street Business District; and WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson's advocacy in Washington, D.C., helped secure federal funds for the Park Street streetscape improvements, which have also contributed to the vibrancy of the District; and WHEREAS, under Beverly J. Johnson's leadership, the City attracted a host of important new businesses, including Peet's Coffee's roasting facility, Donsuemor Cookies, and the headquarters for retail clothing giant VF Outdoors; and WHEREAS, during Beverly J. Johnson's tenure as Mayor, the City also ensured the successful development of the Bridgeside Shopping Center and the revitalization of both the Webster Street Business District and Alameda Towne Centre; and WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson also presided over the development of a variety of new housing projects, including Buena Vista Commons, Shinsei Gardens, and the Breakers at Bayport; and WHEREAS, Beverly J. Johnson's accomplishments also include the construction and opening of a new LEED- certified Main Library and the renovation of the West End Library; and WHEREAS, during her tenure on the City Council and as Mayor, Beverly J. Johnson worked diligently to preserve Alameda's history while promoting its future. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the . City Council of the City of Alameda does hereby express its sincere appreciation to Beverly J. Johnson for her long service to the City of Alameda as a member of the Planning Board and as a Councilmember and Mayor. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Alameda does hereby thank Beverly J. Johnson for her many contributions toward making Alameda a wonderful community in which to live, work, and raise a family. 1, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda during the Regular Meeting of the City Council on the 21st day of December, 2010, by the following vote to wit: AYES: Councilmembers deHaan, Gilmore, Matarrese, Tam and Mayor Johnson - 5.
