AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 642 NEW
SERIES, BY AMENDING SECTION 10
THEREOF RELATING TO PROBA-
TIONARY EMPLOYMENT PERIOD IN
POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS

A LAM ED A that:
Section 1. Ordinance No. 642
New Series is hereby amended
by amending Section 10 thereof
to read as follows:
Section 10. Every origi-
_ nal appointment to a Civil
Service position in the Po-
llee Department carrying
any rate or rank of service
conferred upon police offi-
cers shall be probationary
for a period of two years;
provided, t hat the opera-
tive and effective date of
this provision shall be es-
tablished by rule hereafter
adopted by the Civil Se I'V -
i ce Board.
Every original appoint-
ment to a Civil Service
position in the Fire Depart-
ment carrying any rate or
rank of service conferred
upon firemen shall be
probationary for a period
of one and one-half years;
provided, that the opera-
ti.ve and effective date of
this provision shall be es-
tablished by mile hereafter
adopted by the Civil Serv-
ice Board.
Every other appoint-
ment, original or promo-
tional, to a position in the
Civil Service, including
promotional ap poi ntments
in the Pollee and Fire De-
partments, shall he proba-
tionary for a period of six
months.
Any appointee may, dur-
ing the probationary peri-
od; be summarily rejected
from the position held on
probation without right Of
appeal. If at the time of
his appointment such re-
jected employee held an-
other position in the Civil
Service, he shall be re-
turned to the occupancy of
such former position with-
out loss of rights arising
from such rejection; pro-
vided, however, that sub-
' ject to such rights as may
be granted by Section 12
hereof, or by Section 13-3
of the Charter of the City
of Alameda, any such em-
ployee may be dismissed,
demoted, fined or suspend-
ed from such former posi-
tion for causes arising dur-
ing such probationary ap-
pointment.
Section 2. This ordinance
shall .1..)e in full force and effect
from and after the expiration
of thirty (30) days from the
date of its final. passage.
