Resolution 14666CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 14666 DESIGNATING THE BRUTON HOUSE AT 1240 SAINT CHARLES STREET CITY MONUMENT #30 WHEREAS, an application was made by the property owner Jeannie Graham to request that the City Council designate the dwelling at 1240 Saint Charles Street, also known as the "Bruton House "; and 0 k WHEREAS, the A pp licant has submitted a report prepared by Architectural Historian Woodruff Minor dated October 2011 that finds the Bruton House eligible for Monument status; and WHEREAS, the Historical Advisory Board held a public hearing on this request on December 1, 2011 and acted to recommend that the City Council designate the building; g g; and WHEREAS, the Historical Advisory Board found that this request is not a project as defined by Section 15378 of the California Environmental Quality Act; and WHEREAS, the City Council held a public hearing and examined pertinent documents on 3 April 2012; and WHEREAS, the City Council makes the following findings: 1. Architectural Significance. The Bruton house has architectural significance as a noteworthy example of a Colonial Revival home built by architect Fred P. Fischer of the prominent firm of D. Straub & Son. 2. Historical Significance. The building has historical significance as the home of celebrated California artists Margaret, Esther and Helen Bruton. Secondary historical significance is derived from: the association with the Bruton sisters' father, Daniel Bruton, a prominent San Francisco businessman; and "embodying historical patterns of development in the Gold Coast, while its association with an Irish family reflects broader cultural patterns of immigration and ethnicity in 19th century America." 3. Period of Significance. The Bruton house has been determined to have a period of significance from 1897 to 1944 during which the Bruton family owned the home. 4. Integrity. The Bruton house possesses sufficient integrity to warrant Monument status. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Alameda hereby finds that this request is not a project as defined by Section 15378 of the California Environmental Quality Act Guidelines. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council hereby designates the Bruton House at 1240 Saint Charles Street City Monument #30. 1, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in a regular meeting assembled on the 3rd day of April, 2012, by the following vote to wit: AYES: Councilmembers Bonta, deHaan and Tam —3.
