Resolution 14679CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 14679 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA IN SUPPORT OF AB1648 (BROWNLEY) A BILL RELATED TO DISCLOSURE OF FUNDING OF POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENTS WHEREAS, AB 1648 (Brownley), "The California DISCLOSE Act," is a bill currently pending in the Legislature; and WHEREAS, if enacted, AB 1648 would require greater transparency in the funding of political advertisements; and WHEREAS, AB 1648 would amend the Political Reform Act to require that advertisements supporting or opposing a candidate or ballot measure via radio, television, or print or mass mailing, identify the top three funders of the advertisement; and WHEREAS, disclosure would be required for independent expenditures as well, with the exception of those made by candidate - controlled ballot measure committees; and WHEREAS, the bill would require a committee paying for an advertisement to disclosure its top funders on the committee's website; and WHEREAS, the bill would require a slate mailer to include an asterisk next to a candidate or a ballot measure that paid to be listed on the slate mailer; and WHEREAS, greater transparency in the funding of political advertisements enhances democracy by aiding informed decisionmaking by voters. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Alameda supports AB 1648 (Brownley), "The California DISCLOSE Act." I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in a regular meeting assembled on the 6th day of June, 2012, by the following vote to wit: AYES: Councilmembers Bonta, deHaan, Johnson, 'Tam and Mayor Gilmore — 5.
