Resolution 12182CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 12182 SEEKING DESIGNATION FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE FOR THE CITY OF ALAMEDA TO BECOME AN AMERICA 2000 COMMUNITY WHEREAS, the City of Alameda and the Alameda Unified School District would like to be known as a learning community that is dedicated to building a world-class school system for the future of our children; and WHEREAS, the President and the Nation's Governors adopted an historic set of six national education goals intended to provide a common framework and vision for education reform and to focus the Nation's commitment to new heights of education performance by students of all ages, and WHEREAS, the City of Alameda and the Alameda Unified School District will meet or exceed the National Education Goals which are: Goal 1: All children in America will start school ready to learn. Goal 2: The high school graduation rate will increase to at -i C) least 90 percent. z Goal 3: American students will leave grades four, eight and r-2 twelve having demonstrated competency in challenging subject matter including English, mathematics, science, history and geography; and every school in America will ensure that all students learn to use their minds well, so they may be prepared for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment in our modern economy. Goal 4: U.S. students will be first in the world in science and mathematics achievement. Goal 5: Every adult American will be literate and will possess the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in a global economy and exercise the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Goal 6: Every school in America will be free of drugs and violence and will offer a disciplined environment conducive to learning. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council supports and endorses the Alameda Unified School District's: a. Development and implementation of a strategy to achieve or exceed the above stated goals; 0 (1) 3 b. Development of a "report card" to measure progress; c. Demonstration of our readiness to create and support a New America School. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA that the City of Alameda with the Alameda Unified School District, seeks the designation from the Governor's office as an AMERICA 2000 Community. I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the 17th day of December , 1991, by the following vote to wit: AYES: Councilmembers Arnerich, Camicia, Lucas, Roth and President Withrow - 5.
