REVESTING THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF AIANTZA COUNTY
TO TAKE ACTION FOR TEE REPLACEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF
TEE FRUIGNALE AVENUE BRIDGE.
eERAS the bridge connecting the City of Alameda with the mainland, commonly
knowm. as the Fruitvale Avenue Bridge, is Alamedafs only rail connection with the main
line railroads for distribution of freight, and
WHEREAS under the decision of the Railroad Commission of the State of California,
No 26671, dated March 23, 1936, permitting the discontinuance of passenger ferry service
between Alameda and the City of San Francisco upon the commencement of electric railway
train service over the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, said Fruitvale Avenue Bridge will
provide the only rail connection for electric trains for the transportation of passengers
from Alameda to San Francisco, and
WHEREAS the Fruitvale Avenue Bridge, by reason of its extremely low clearance,
which necessitates frequent opening for the smallest type of water-craft, and by reason
of its antiqueted design and slow method of operation, presents a grave hinderance to the
maintenance of adequate and efficient passenger train schedules, and
WHaREAS past experience has shown that the danger of collision with said bridge
by water-craft is ever present and that said bridge can easily be put out of service by
such collisions, and
WHEREAS in the event of collision with or damage to said bridge all freight
and rail passenger traffic moving from or to Alameda would be completely stopped, there-
by causing great and irreparable damage to business and industrial interests of the
City and to the entire population thereof, and
WHEREAS a dispute now exists between the County of Alameda and the United
States Government as to the responsibility for the maintenance and replacement of the
present bridge structure, and
WHEREAS public interest and necessity requires that the present Fruitvale
Avenue Bridge be replaced by a modern structure without further delay,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA that the
Board of Supervisors of the County of Alameda be and it is hereby requested. to take
such immediate action as may be necessary to detertine upon what governmental agency
or department rests the responsibility for the construction and maintenance of such
new bridge structure, and such further action as may be necessary to bring about an
early undertaking of such construction,
RESOLVED FURTHER that a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to
said Board of Supervisors and to the Honorable Albert C. Carter and Honorable John H.
Tolan,
I, the undeesigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly
and regularly introduced and adopted by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular
meeting assembled on the 4th day of October, 1935, by the following vote, to wit:
AYES: Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President
Weichhart, (5).
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
