COMMENDING WILVER DORNEL STARGELL FOR HIS OUTSTANDING
PERFORMANCE WITH THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES BASEBALL TEAM
AND HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY OF ALAMEDA AND OTHER
COMMUNITIES IN THE BAY AREA.
WHEREAS, "Willie" Stargell spent many childhood years in the
City of Alameda, attended Washington Elementary School, and graduated
from Encinal High School in 1958; where he was awarded eight (8) Letter
in the various sports of basketball; football and baseball; and
WHEREAS, he has played professional baseball for 17 years, and
in 1979 played with the Pittsburg Pirates Baseball Team, winner of the
1979 World Series; and
WHEREAS, Willie Stargell was voted the "most valuable player"
in the World Series in 1979; and
WHEREAS, he has made outstanding contributions to the City of
Alameda, including contributing sports equipment to Encinal High School
and working with youth of the City of Alameda; and
WHEREAS, he has been involved in many beneficial programs in
the comrnur!ities of the Bay Area, including fund raising efforts for
Sickle Cell Anemia. and
WHEREAS, he was voted the winner of the Brian Piccolo award for
the athlete in the United States contributing most to the betterment of
man and his community in 1976.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City
of Alameda expresses its pride in his achievements and congratulates him
for his outstanding contributions to the City of Alameda and for the example
he has set for the youth of our great Nation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Alameda City Council and the
citizens of Alameda extend to WILLIE STARGELL their best wishes for good
health, happiness, and continued success in the years ahead;
the undersigned, hereby certify that the forepainp Resolution
was duly and regularly introduced and adopted hy the Council of the City
Lf /Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the 617n day of November, 1979,
by fine following vote, to wit:
