URGING US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS TO REMOVE
SUNKEN BOAT(S) IN OAKLAND ESTUARY
WHEREAS, one and possibly more boats have sunk into the Oakland Estuary at
the Derby Street location of a 20" EBMUD water main bringing potable water to the City
of Alameda; and
WHEREAS, authorities with jurisdiction over the Oakland Estuary had been aware
of this situation for some time but have chosen to wait until a navigational hazard
determination has been made; and
WHEREAS, during any week, commercial tugs push barges heavily -laden with
sand and gravel up the Estuary creating sizable wakes that batter the sunken vessel o
vessels; and
WHEREAS, there is a high probability that the sunken boat(s) are resting on or >
just above the 20" Derby Street water main; and
WHEREAS, this is one of only three water main feeds that supplies the City of
Alameda with water; and
WHEREAS, the loss of any of the water mains would result in a severe loss of
domestic water service to the City; and
WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon the US Army Corps of Engineers to move as
expeditiously as possible to resolve this potential life threatening situation;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Alameda
that the US Army Corps of Engineers is requested to take immediate steps to remove this
threat to navigation and to the domestic water supply for the City of Alameda and the
City Clerk is directed to send a copy of this resolution to US Army Corps of Engineers.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution
was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the
City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the 7th day of
July , 1992, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Arnerich, Camicia, Lucas, Roth
and President Withrow - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
ABSTENTIONS: None,
