Resolution 12555CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 12555 SUPPORTING ASSEMBLY BILL 61 (PUBLIC LIBRARY LEARNING AND LITERACY EXPANSION ACT OF 1994) WHEREAS, the City of Alameda's Carnegie Main Library is 91 years old and in extremely poor and crowded condition; and WHEREAS, a new or expanded library would provide the type of accessible library service our diverse community needs and deserves; and WHEREAS, the Library Board and City Council have agreed that the existing Main Library facility is too small and inadequate for present day use; and WHEREAS, local funds are not sufficient for construction /renovation; and WHEREAS, the public library is a supplement to the formal system of free public education, a source of information and inspiration to persons of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds, a resource for continuing education and re- education beyond the years of formal education., and needs to be preserved and maintained and thereors deserves adequate financial support from governments of all levels; and WHEREAS, Assemblywoman Deirdre Alpert introduced Assembly Bill 61 which would enact the Public Library Learning and Literacy Expansion Act of 1994 which, if adopted, would authorize the issuance pursuant to the State General Obligation Bond Law of bonds for the purpose of financing a specific library construction and renovation program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City of Alameda hereby endorses and supports the passage of AB 61 (Alpert) by the Legislature. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby directed to forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Governor, the Speaker of the Assembly, the President pro tempore of the Senate, Senate Minority Leader, Assembly Minority Floor Leader, Assemblywoman Deirdre Alpert, Assemblywoman Barbara Lee, and Senator Nicholas Petris. I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the 19th day of July , 1994, by the following vote to wit: AYES: Councilmembers Appezzato, Arnerich, Lucas, Roth and President Withrow - 5.
