SUPPORTING CALIFORNIA SENATE BILL 793 PERTAINING TO
EMERGENCY FUNDING FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS IMPACTED BY BASE
CLOSURES
WHEREAS, it is anticipated that Alameda schools will
suffer economic loss in the range of $2 million to $8 million per
year in state funding as a result of the closure of the Alameda
Naval Air Station; and
WHEREAS, while a variety of commissions have been
established to "study" the issue, immediate action is needed to
provide financial assistance for our local schools; and
WHEREAS, California Senate Bill 793 co-authored by
Assemblywoman Barbara Lee would address the issue of funds lost to
Alameda schools because of base closures.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Alameda supports the adoption of California Senate Bill
793 which provides for emergency funding to school districts
impacted by base closures.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby
directed to forward a certified copy of this resolution to the
Chair and committee members of the Assembly Appropriation Committee
listed in Exhibit A attached hereto and to Assemblywoman Barbara
Lee.
