Resolution 12934CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 12934 THANKING FERRY SERVICE PROVIDERS FOR EXPANDED SERVICE DURING BART STRIKE WHEREAS, the City of Alameda contracts for both East and West end ferry services to transport residents from Alameda to San Francisco; and WHEREAS, the East end ferry service is provided by Harbor Bay Maritime and the West end ferry service is provided by Blue and Gold Fleet; and WHEREAS, during the week of September 8, 1997, BART went on strike resulting in major inconveniences to the citizens of Alameda who normally commute by BART and to the residents who normally drive due to increased congestion on the roadways to San Francisco; and WHEREAS, the City's Ferry Marketing Consultant, Ernest Sanchez, had the foresight to plan and coordinate these emergency response activites, and was tireless in resolving operational issues throughout the duration of the strike; and WHEREAS, as both ferry service providers, at no cost to the City, agreed to increase their services by providing larger vessels and enhanced schedules; and WHEREAS, these service improvements resulted in a three to four fold increase in ferry ridership from Alameda to San Francisco resulting in over 3,600 riders per day using the ferries; and m WHEREAS; despite the crowded conditions, long lines, long hours, and the shortage of dockage space in San Francisco, the service providers personnel were consistently friendly and patient with the new riders; and WHEREAS; the ferry service providers are continuing to work with the City to maintain enhanced schedules. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Alameda that the City Council hereby acknowledges service above and beyond the call of duty and extends their sincerest appreciation and thanks to the personnel of both ferry service providers, Harbor Bay Maritime whose President is Captain Paul Bishop and Blue and Gold Fleet whose Executive Director is Ronald Duckhorn and Ernest Sanchez of Sanchez Communications. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby directed to forward a certified copy of this resolution to Harbor Bay Maritime, Blue and Gold Fleet and Sanchez Communications. I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the 7th day of October , 1997, by the following vote to wit: AYES: Councilmembers Daysog, DeWitt, Kerr, Lucas and President Appezzato - 5.
