RESCINDING RESOLUTION NO. 10037 AND READOPTING THE STREET
NAME POLICY WITH A MODIFICATION TO ALLOW THE USE OF
CORPORATE ADDRESS DESIGNATIONS FOR PRIVATE OR PUBLIC
STREETS IN THOSE INSTANCES WHERE THE CAMPUS IS LARGER THAN
ONE ACRE ENCOMPASSING AT LEAST TWO BUILDINGS IN A
COMMERCIAL AREA, WHERE ONLY BUILDINGS OWNED AND LEASED
LONG -TERM BY THE CORPORATION ARE ADDRESSED FROM THE
STREET AND CONSOLIDATING THE STREET NAMING POLICY INTO A
SINGLE DOCUMENT
WHEREAS, the Planning Board of the City of Alameda adopted a Statement of Policy
Regarding Street Names on April 8, 1957; and
WHEREAS, the City Council adopted Resolution 10037, Approving and Adopting a City
of Alameda Street Naming Policy on May 4, 1983; and
WHEREAS, by motion, the City Council approved revisions to the City's Street Naming
Policy and adopted a document called Street Naming Policy on December 4, 1990; and
WHEREAS, by motion, the City Council approved a recommendation from the City
Manager to adopt a Policy for Naming City Property on October 1, 1991 which incorporated the
City Street Naming Policy by reference; and
WHEREAS, the Street Naming Policy requires that only names which appear of the
"Official Naming List For City Facilities And Streets" may be used for the naming of new streets
or the renaming of existing streets; and
WHEREAS, to encourage the siting of corporate campuses in Alameda, City staff has
requested a modification of the Street Naming Policy to allow the use of a corporate address
designation for a private or public street in those instances where the campus is larger than one
acre encompassing at least two buildings in a commercial area, where only buildings owned and
leased long -term by the corporation are addressed from the street; and
WHEREAS, the use of a street name which incorporates the name of the corporation
located on that street helps to promote the corporate identity and designates all of the corporate
buildings under a single street name; and
WHEREAS, the proposed modifications to the Street Naming Policy would help a
corporation to identify its corporate campus and would, in turn, help promote economic
development in Alameda.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ALAMEDA that the "City of Alameda Street Naming Policy" with the proposed revisions,
attached hereto as Exhibit "A ", is hereby readopted as an official City policy.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Resolution No. 10037, as amended by motion on
December 4, 1990, is hereby rescinded.

CITY OF ALAMEDA
STREET NAMING POLICY
Adopted by Resolution on August 18, 1998
A. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Priority shall be given to utilizing street names which represent persons, places or events
associated with the historical development of the City of Alameda.
(a) Except as permitted under Section 1 (b), below, only names which appear on the Official
Naming List for City Facilities and Streets. as the Historical Advisory Board may amend
it from time to time shall be utilized for the naming of new streets or renaming of existin g
streets. Additions or deletions to the List shall be approved by the Historical Advisory
Board, based on written documentation of the historic importance of the name in Alameda
history.
(b) A corporate address designation may be approved for a street in those instances where the
corporate campus which the street serves is larger than one acre encompassing at least two
buildings in a commercial area. Criteria for the use of a corporate street name are:
(1) The Planning Board shall review specific street names, making street name
recommendations to the City Council. The City Council will make the final
decision to approve the use of a particular street name, ensuring that it is
appropriate and that it would not compromise the City's ability to provide swift
emergency response.
(2) The roadway to be named must be developed as a street. The street to be named
must be full radius return, and be acceptable as a street under City design
standards for sidewalks, curbs and intersection configuration.
(3)
The street to be named must be located in an area of the City designated in the
General Plan as Community Commercial, Office, Business Park, Mixed Use or
General Industry on corporate property greater than one acre in size with two or
more corporate buildings on -site.
(4) The name to be used must be distinct from all other street names used in the City
of Alameda, to eliminate possible confusion during an emergency response.

(5) The only buildings to be addressed from the named street which is under the full
control of said corporation shall be those which are owned or leased long -term an d
are used for the operation of the corporation for which the street is named. In
general, buildings shall be addressed from the street which they face (main
entrance). All addressing must be approved by the City's Building Official.
(6) To aid in emergency response, the type and location of all street signs used on the
street shall meet City standards and specifications. All street signs shall be installed
and maintained by the property owner of record.
(7)
In the event of the disappearance of the corporation for which the street is named,
the street name shall remain in force until such time as the new property owner of
record takes all necessary actions to rename the street, subject to the approval of
the Planning Board and City Council. All costs associated with renaming such a
street shall be borne by the new property owner of record, including the payment
of all appropriate processing fees under the Master Fee Resolution.
(8) The street to be named shall otherwise comply with the City's street naming
regulations as set out in AMC Section 13 -25 and this Street Naming Policy.
2. Street names shall be approved by the Planning Board based on the list of Possible Street
Names (except as permitted under Section 1 (b), above). However, any change to an
existing street name, which would affect the addressing of any existing business or
residence, shall require City Council in addition to Planning Board approval.
Where feasible and appropriate, historic street names shall be chosen which directly relate
to that portion of the City in which the street to be named is located.
3. Consistency in naming shall be maintained within a Subdivision Tract, Planned
Development, or other development or geographic area where street name themes
currently exist, are planned or are discernable.
4. Street names shall remain the same across intersecting streets.
5. The use of the same name but different suffices for adjacent streets s hall be avoided, with
the exception of a small court or cul -de -sac adjacent to a main road. For example,
Brighton Court off Brighton Road.
6. A street name shall not intersect another street name at more than one location. The use
of circle or loop as a suffix is not encouraged except under limited, specific design
situations.
7. Similarly spelled or pronounced street names shall be avoided within the City.

8. The number of letters in the street name, including suffix, shall be compatible with the
physical limitations of street name signs used in the City.
B. SUFFIX CONSIDERATION
In general, street names should include a suffix, such as those following, to clearly
indicate that it is part of the vehicular circulation system and to minimize the possibility
of confusion with development or project place names. Names lacking such suffixes or
ending in such words as Harbor, Isle, Point are not encouraged, except to retain the
continuity of established naming schemes. Such names, those utilizing terms from other
languages such as Embarcadero, Camino and Via, and other non - typical names shall be
considered individually for appropriateness, merit, and general conformance to this policy.
