SUPPORTING THE CITY AND COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO'S
RESOLUTIONS TO WORK WITH THE METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION
COMMISSION(MTC) AND CALTRANS TO RETAIN THE CURRENT
TRANSBAY TRANSIT TERMINAL AS THE TERMINUS FOR AC TRANSIT
INTER-CITY BUS SERVICE AND PROVIDE FOR FUTURE PASSENGER
RAIL SERVICE IN THE DESIGN OF THE BAY BRIDGE
WHEREAS, the Transbay Transit Terminal in downtown San
Francisco was constructed as an integral part of the Bay Area
regional transportation system with service across the Bay Bridge
operating since 1939; and
WHEREAS, The City of Alameda has AC Transit transbay busQ
service to the Transbay Transit Terminal which is highly valued by 0
our residents; and
WHEREAS, in the City and County of San Francisco election of ?„I
November 3, 1998, the voters approved Proposition 1, which —4
requested that the City and County of San Francisco work with the
Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and Caltrans to retain
the Transbay Transit Terminal site and renovating it to allow for
the possible expansion of regional transit systems including
passenger rail service as part of the design of the Bay Bridge; and
WHEREAS, the same policy was adopted by the voters of
Emeryville, Oakland, Berkeley; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda passed a resolution in June 1998,
supporting the continued use of the existing Transbay Transit
Terminal and the ramps which serve the facility; and
WHEREAS, every year studies show that traffic congestion is a
top problem in the Bay Area, that the Bay Bridge is at capacity
during rush hour today and that travel demand is projected to grow
substantially in the next decade; and

WHEREAS, rail service across the bridge could carry ten times
as many passengers per lane as drive-alone automobiles; and
WHEREAS, less automobile use reduces air and water pollution,
and traffic congestion through out the Bay Area; and
WHEREAS, improving access and increasing capacity of the Bay
Bridge is important for the current and future needs of City of
Alameda citizens and redevelopment efforts; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda wishes to recognize and support
the City and County of San Francisco's efforts in this area.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of
Alameda, by resolution, to support the City and County of San
Francisco to work with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission
(MTC) and Caltrans and the Cities of Emeryville, Oakland and.
Berkeley to retain the current Transbay Transit Terminal as the
terminus for AC Transit inter-City bus service.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED to support the City and County of
San Francisco in its efforts to work with the Metropolitan
Transportation Commission (MTC), and Caltrans to provide for the
future inclusion of passenger rail service in the design of the Bay
Bridge.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly
adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on
the 16th day of February , 1999, by the following vote to wit:

President Appezzato - 5.
