DECLARING THE CITY OF ALAMEDA
A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FREE CITY
WHEREAS, October is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, Domestic violence affects every member of a community, costing the nation
from $5 to $10 billion annually in medical expenses, community police and court costs, shelter
and foster care, sick leave absenteeism and non - productivity; and
WHEREAS, Violence by intimate partners is the leading cause of injury to women
responsible for more injuries than car crashes, rapes, and muggings combined; and
WHEREAS, Domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and
children in Alameda County; and
WHEREAS, Domestic violence seriously threatens the health and emotional well -being
of children, and is the number one pre- indicator for the presence of child abuse within a home;
and
WHEREAS, The citizens of the City of Alameda recognize that domestic violence is
incompatible with healthy relationships, and that breaking the cycle of violence requires a
focused and coordinated community response; and
WHEREAS, The City of Alameda Domestic Violence Task Force was created one year
ago to coordinate domestic violence prevention and intervention services in the City of Alameda,
and seeks to mobilize all members of our community to take a proactive role in building a
domestic violence -free city.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Alameda
hereby declares the City of Alameda as
A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE -FREE CITY

I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly
adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in a regular meeting assembled on the 2nd
day of October, 2001, by the following vote to wit.
AYES: Councilmembers'Daysog, Johnson, Kerr and
Vice Mayor DeWitt - 4.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: Mayor Appezzato -
ABSTENTIONS: None.
