Resolution 14839 CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO.14839 RESOLUTION SUPPORTING ASSEMBLY BILL AB 1324 WHEREAS, 12,622 cars were reported stolen in Alameda County in 2012, which is a 17% increase from 2011, creating an urgent need to address car theft throughout the County; and WHEREAS, current law allows counties to add a $1.00 surcharge to vehicle registration and $2.00 for service tax to commercial vehicles which is designated to fund abandoned vehicle abatement programs and deterring, investigating, and prosecuting vehicle theft; and WHEREAS, the State Controller’s 2011-2012 annual report stated that $1.3 million was generated statewide as a result of the $1/$2 surcharges; and WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 1324 (Skinner and Bonta), Vehicles: additional registration fees: vehicle theft crimes, will authorize the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to increase the surcharge fee from $1.00 to $2.00 and from $2.00 to $4.00 for commercial vehicles; and WHEREAS, AB 1324 would double the amount generated by the surcharge fees over a four year period and provide Alameda County with necessary funds to prevent and combat the growing problem of vehicle theft . NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Alameda supports ASSEMBLY BILL AB 1324 (Skinner and Bonta) to further increase the vehicle registration fee and help fund investigations and prosecution of vehicle theft crimes. * * * * * * I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in a regular meeting assembled on the 2nd day of July, 2013, by the following vote to wit: AYES: Councilmembers Chen, Daysog, Ezzy Ashcraft, Tam and Mayor Gilmore – 5.
