ROLL CALL: The roll was called and Councilmen Howe, Jones and. Vice President Maurer, (3), were noted present. Absent: Councilman Branscheid and President Godfrey, (2). WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS: ]Y. From Mr. P. Royal Haulman, roue sting permission to move a building now located on Lincoln Avenue west of Eighth Street to property to be known as 940 Buena :Vista Avenue, being 200 feet east of Wood Street. This request was accompanied by a com- munication signed by eight property owners in the immediate vicinity, signifying their approval of this house moving. A letter was also presented in regard to this matter by the Building Inspector, recommending that permission be granted to move the house in question. Councilman Howe then moved permission be granted to Mr. Haulman to move the above men- tioned house as set forth in his request, provided all regulations of City ordinances pertaining to house moving be complied with. The motion was seconded by Councilman Jones and unanimously carried. 2. From Jr. Manuel Soares, submitting a bid of $200. for the purchase of a seven horsepower Argo turbine pump recently removed from one of the City parks. The City Manager stated he felt this was a fair price for the pump as it could no longer be used by the City and recommended that it be sold for the price offered. Councilman Jones moved the recommendation of the City Manager be accepted, and the pump in question be sold to Mr. Soares for the sum of $200. The motion was seconded by Councilman Howe and on roll call carried by the following vote. Ayes: Councilmen Howe, Jones and Vice President Maurer, (3) . Noes: None. Absent: Councilman Branscheid and President Godfrey, (2). 3. A letter was presented from General Engineering and. Dry Dock Company, requesting permission to construct an extension to its present railroad track from its property across Grand Street to certain property which is contemplated to be leased from the Alaska Packer's Association. The matter was referred to the next regular meeting of the Council for action. OPENING OF BIDS: 4. A bid was presented from the Key System for the removal of the railroad tracks now on Encinal Avenue between Oak and Sherman Streets in the amount of y ,740. The bid was accompanied by a certified check in the sum of ',:1174. There being no objections, the bid was referred to the City Manager and City Attorney for recommendation. After examination, the City Manager recommended that contract be awarded to the Key System for the removal of these tracks in accordance with Specifications therefor, No. PW 9-423. Councilman Jones moved the recommendation of the City Manager be accepted and that contract be awarded to Key System for the removal of tracks at its bid price of 1,740. The motion was seconded by Councilman Howe and on roll call carried by the following vote. Ayes: Councilmen Howe, Jones and Vice President Maurer, (3). Noes: None, Absent: Councilman Eranscheid and President Godfrey, (2). RETORTS OF COMMITTEE : 5v: From Mr. Norman D. Weeden, tendering his resignation as a member of the Library Board of the City of Alameda, as he is entering the service of the United States Army. Councilman Jones moved the resignation of Mr. Weeden as a member of the Library Board be regretfully accepted, effective immediately and the City Clerk be requested to write to Mr. Weeden extending appreciation for his services on this Board, both as a member and in his recent capacity as President. The motion was seconded by Councilman Howe and unanimously carried. 6' Dr, W. Barclay Stephens, tendering his resignation as Chairman of the Com- mittee on Civil Protection of the Alameda Defense Council. Dr. Stephens is returning to active medical work. Councilman Howe moved the resignation of Dr. W. -Barclay Stephens be accepted with regret and a letter of appreciation be sent to him. The motion was seconded by Councilman Jones and unanimously carried. kr' 7. From Mayor Godfrey, appointing Mr. Joseph M. Long, 1737 Moreland Drive, Alameda, as a member of the Alameda Defense Council to serve as Chairman of the Committee on Civil Protection for a term expiring June 10, 1943. Councilman Jones moved the appointment of Mr. Long as a member of the Alameda Defense Council be confirmed. The motion was seconded by Councilman Howe and unanimously carried- UNFINISHED BUS NESS: 8. Referred from the regular meeting of September 1, was the matter of the contem- plated remodeling to be done to three houses placed on property situated at the south end of High Street by Mr. George H. Noble. The City Manager and Building Inspector had been requested to investigate the suitability of the structures in this locality. At the request of the City Manager, Mr. Noble submitted a letter outlining what repairs and improvements he expected to make to each house. The City Manager stated he had examined, the properties and the improvements proposed will conform to all City regu- lations. There being no objections, the explanatory letter of Mr. Noble was accepted as a basis for the proposed improvements to the houses in question and the matter referred to the Building Inspector, .ADJOURL=T: 9. There being no further business to come before the meeting, the Council adjourned to assemble in regular session on Tuesday evening, September 15, 1942, at 8:00 p. m.
