1939-01-30 Regular CC MinutesADjOURITED REGULAR 'MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA
HELD MONDAY EVENING, JANUARY 30th 1939
The meeting convened at 8 o'clock P.M. with President Weichhart presiding.
The roll was called, and Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and Pres-
ident Weichhart, (5), were noted present. Absent: None.
1. The City Manager read a letter from Burnett Hamilton, County Surveyor of Alameda
County, in reference to an inspection made, of the Fruitvale Avenue Bridge including
that of a diver on Janue,ry 12, 1939, and reporting that structurally the superstructure
is in good condition,the potential hazard being the possibility of damage to the bridge
by collision with some large vessel. The communication was ordered filed.
/2. The City Manager reported the results of a conference with representatives of the
Railroad Commission, the transportation companies and the State Bridge Authority; that
it had been agreed upon to revise some of the train schedules so as to make the time of
arrival in San Francisco more convenient to the travelling public, and also to create
an improvement in the service at night and on Sundays and holidays; also that the
Southern Pacific Company had agreed to provide an emergency ferry service in case of
interruption to the service across the Bay Bridge.
3. The Clerk read telegrams from F, A. Silcox, Chief Forest Service, Washington D.C.,
and E. S. Land, Chairman U. S. Maritime Commission, Washington D.C., urging the donation
of additional land on Government Island to the United States Government.
4. The meeting was addressed by Capt. Brown, Mr. Barker, Mr. Sanford, Commander Bluhm,
Mr. Moffitt, Commander Finley, Mr. C. C. Howard, Mr. John Parker, Mr. Frank Gottstein,
Er. John F. Ward, Councilman Morris, Councilman Godfrey and Er. Hutchinson. The Mayor
assured the assemblage that the Council would reach a decision by the next regular
meeting on February 7, 1939, in regard to placing the proposition on the ballot at the
coming general municipal election, and the matter was referred to the Committee of the
Whole.
5. There being no Dmrther business to transact, the meeting adjourned-to meet in
regular session on Tuesday evening, February 7, 1939, at 8 o'clock P.M..
