HELD TUESDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 16, 1934
The meeting convened et 8:05 o'clock P.M. with President Murray presiding.
The roll was'called and Councilmen Bruzzone, Eschen, Morris and President Murray
(4) were noted present. Absent: Councilman Tiedemann (1).
The minutes of the regular meeting of October 2nd and the minutes Of the adjourn-
ed regular meeting of October 5th, 1934, were read and approved.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS.,
1. From the City Planning Commission, recommending to the Council the reclassifica-
•ion of 891 Union Street, from a Residence District, Class I, to a Residence District,
Class II, for the purpose of conducting a Rest Home. There was also presented a
petition signed by thirty-two individuals protesting the rezoning of the property.
On motion of Councilman Morris, seconded by Councilman Bruzzone and unanimously
carried, the question of reclassifying this property was referred back to the Plann-
ing Commission for further hearing, aswell as the petition from the objectors.
'Pr 2. v/ From the City Planning Commission, recommending to the Council as the official
lighting standard, the adoption of a monolithic concrete standard. On motion of
Councilman Eschen, seconded by Councilman Morris, and unanimously carried, the commun-
ication was referred to the Committee of the Whole.
3. From Mrs. Margaret Atkins, referring to the delinquent taxes owed by her, and
requesting that she be permitted to pay them in installments. As such an arrangement
would not be permissible under the law governing the collection of taxes, in this
City4 The communication was ordered filed.
4. From the Santa Cruz-Portland Cement Company, accompanied by 6 formal application
for a permit to construct and operate a railroad spur track across Work Street, to
connect with the plant of the applicant. As a resolution was to be introduced
covering this application, the communication was ordered filed.
fr' 5.4 From the Smith Lumber Company, requesting acceptance for dedication of street
work on Roosevelt Drive, and offering to guarantee to the Council the cost of
the installation of the necessary lighting system, the estimate of the cost of
such installation being 41,358.84, as furnished by the Board of Public Utilities.
On motion of Councilman Eschen, seconded by Councilman Morris and unanimously
carried, the offer of the guarantee was accepted, provided it consist of a deposit
in escrow of the amount mentioned, and the City Attorney was instructed to prepare
a suitable contract covering the transaction.
6./ From the Board of Public Utilities, accompanied by a copy of communication
from Mr. Erie Kenney, Director of Emergency Educational Program, covering classes
in Americanization, English and Homemaking on Bay Farm Island, requesting that the
City donate the electricity for lighting purposes during the progress of the
program. On motion of Councilman Eschen, seconded by Councilman Bruzzone, and un-
animously carried, the request was granted, t"Le service to be included in the
lighting account for City schools.
From E. G. Ryder, Chairman Advisory Board called by the Chamber of Commerce
to undertake a survey in connection with the Better Housing Program initiated by
the National Housing Act, and requesting that the City donate the sum of 4500.00
to be used for stenogfaphic services and supervision. The communication was
referred to the City Attorney for report as to whether the City could legally
donate the sum asked for.
REPORTS OF COMMITTEES:
V 8.1 From E.E.Farwell, Chairman of a Committee appointed by the Mayor to investigate
the first aid and life saving methods now in operation by the City, and making
recommendations as to future operation of this service. On motion of Councilman
Morris, seconded by Councilman Eschen, and unanimously carried, the report was
referred to the City Manager, with a recommendation that it be adopted and that
the use of the present equipment of the City be continued, if possible, but ex-
cepting the recommendation for the procuring of a motor boat; also that the City
Manager recommend to the members of the Police and Fire Departments that they avail
themselves of the first aid and life saving course now available in the Alameda
Evening High School.

V 9. Councilman Eschen moved, seconded by Councilman Bruzzone and unanimously
carried, that the bids be opened for the improvement of Webster Street and Maitland

Councilman Eschen moved, seconded by Councilman Bruzzone, and on roll call
passed unanimously, that the claims and bills against the City in the several
amounts as listed and itemized in the "List of Claims passed by the Council
of the City of Alameda at their Regular Meeting Held. Tuesday Evening, October
16th, 1934", filed with the City Clerk on October 16th, 1934, and presented
to the Council be allowed and paid.
There being no further business to transact, the Council adjourned to meet
in regular sessioilgedzsdayevening, November 7th, 1934, at 8 o'clock P.M.
