HELD TUESDAY EVENING, JUNE 1st 1937
The meeting convened at 8 o'clock P.M. with President Weichhart presiding.
The roll was called, and Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President
Weichhart, (5), were noted present. Absent: None.
MINUTES:
The minutes of the regular meeting of May 18th and the adjourned regular meeting of
May 26th, 1937, were approved as transcribed.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS:
11. A communication was received from the Alameda Journal, informing the Council that it
had definitely suspended publication. The communication was ordered filed.
/2. From the Alameda Times-Star, informing the Council that, effective May 28th, 1937,
the rate for legal advertising would be as follows:
First insertion $ 1.50 per square
Second insertion 1.00 per square
Third and subsequent insertions .75 per square.
The commnication was ordered filed.
13, From the Alameda Chamber of Commerce, referring to action taken by the City Planning
Commission on June 15th, 1932 and by the City Council on June 21st, 1932, adopting recom-
mendations for rezoning of certain pieces of property for industrial purposes. The commu-
nication was. referred to the Committee of the Whole.
44. From Dr. Alice B. Burke, requesting extension of time within which to construct buil*
ings on the property adjoining 1915 Santa Clara Avenue, which was rezoned on November 17,
1936, for this purpose. Councilman Maurer moved, seconded by Councilman Godfrey, that
the tine to commAnce construction be extended for a period of six months. After some dis-
cussion in regard to the lack of information contained in the request as to why the owner
was unable to build at this time, the motion was amended to provide for an extension of
time to the nextmeeting of the Council on June 15th, 1937, in order that the applicant
might give the information desired. The motion was carried by the following vote: Ayes:
Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President Weichhart, (5). Noes: None.

HEARINGS:
i5. The hearing on the request of the Building Inspector to declare the old house at
1439 Morton Street a public nuisance was opened. The representative of the holders of the
deed of trust informed the Council that the property would be sold under foreclosure on
June 4th, at which time the title would pass to his clients and action would immediately
be taken to improve the property or to dispose of it to some person who would. Councilman
Maurer moved that the hearing be continued until July 6th, 1937, seconded by Councilman -
Morris and on roll call carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Carrington, Maurer,
Morris and President Weichhart, (4). Noes: Councilman Godfrey, (1). Absent: None.
REPORTS OF COMMITTEES, ETC:
/ 6. From the Mayor, City Manager and Auditor, reporting that they had counted the money
and securities in the City Treasury on May 19th, 1937, and the amount under the control
of the City Treasurer was the same as that, according to the City Auditor's books, should
have at that time been in the City Treasury. The communication was ordered filed.
17• From the City Attorney, informing the Council that the Pacific Telephone and Tele-
graph Company had brought an action against the City to recover 05337.86, representing
the amount of certain taxes paid to the City under protest, and that the suit is an
attack on the method of evaluation used by the State Board of Equalization in assessing
the property of the Company within the limits of the City; that a suit involving the
same conditions is to be tried in one of the larger cities and in the mean time, the
pending suit against the City would remain in abeyance. The communication was ordered
filed.
,(8. From Jordan & Ticoulet, Accountants and Auditors, enclosing a report on the crit-
icism of the City's accounting system filed with the City Council at the meeting of
May 18th, 1937, by A. V. Hougard. The communication was ordered filed and the Clerk
requested to for:rd a copy to Mr. Hougard.
NEW BUSINESS:
9. Councilman Godfrey made a motion that, effective the first meeting in July, the
City Manager file the first of a series of monthly reports, outlining the various pro-
jects now being undertaken, or about to be undertaken under the jurisdiction of the City
Manager. The motion was seconded by Councilman Maurer and unanimously carried.

10. Councilmen Maurer introduced and moved the adoption of

Councilman Carrington seconded the motion, and on roll call carried by the following
vote: Ayes: Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President Weichhart, (5).

the General Fund",
Councilman Maurer seconded the motion, and on roll call carried by the following vote:

Nos. 227 N.S., 319 N.S. and 338 N.S., Excepting, However,

22. An itemized list of claims against the City of Alameda and the several departments
thereof in the total amounts as follows, was presented to the City Council: General De-

Councilman Morris moved, seconded by Councilman Carrington, that the claims and bills
against the City in the amounts as listed and itemized in the List of Claims filed with
the City Clerk on June 1st, 1937, and presented to the Council at this meeting be allowed
and paid. On roll call this motion carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Carrillo
ton, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President Weichhart, (5). Noes: None. Absent: None.
23. There being no further business to transact, the Council adjourned to net in regular
session on Tuesday evening, June 15th, 1937, at 8 o'clock P.M.
