ITTEN COMMUNICATIONS:
/1. A Notice of Hearing before the Railroad Commission of the State of California for
authority to abandon the San Francisco-Berkeley ferry line of the Southern Pacific Gold-
en Gate Ferries, Ltd., to be held Wednesday, June 30th, 1937, at 10 o'clock A.M. The
communication was ordered filed.

/2. From the Board of Public Utilities Commissioners, in reference to the budget adopted
by that Board for the fiscal year ending June 30th, 1938 and including a copy of the
budget in which the City is allowed a dividend of $125,000.00 which includes the cost
of City lighting for the fiscal year ending June 30th, 1938. The communication was
Ordered filed and a copy referred to the Committee of the Whole,
3. From the Alameda Chamber of Commerce, recommending erection of directional signs
at certain intersections in Oakland and also of illuminated posters in Alameda. The
communication was referred to the Committee of the Whole.
/4. From the Alameda Chamber of Commerce, recommending that provision be made in the
budget for the coming fiscal year for the cost of a civic publication to appear period-
ically under the auspices of the Chamber of Commerce to serve as an advertising medium
for the City. The communication was referred to the Committee of the Whole.
From the Board of Education, requesting the exemption from taxation of two pieces
of property purchased by the Board for the expansion of Mastick School. The communicat
tion was referred to the City Attorney.
/6. From C.C. Howard, for all interested parties, requesting a temporary revocable
permit to operate a boarding house for students of aeronautics at 1433 Morton Street.
On motion of Councilman Maurer the application was referred to the City Planning
Commission, seconded by Councilman Godfrey and on roll call carried by the following
vote: Ayes: Councilmen Godfrey, Maurer and President Weichhart, (3). Noes: None. Absent:
Councilmen Carrington and Morris, (2).
17. From Frank B. Durkee, Attorney for Department of Public Works of the State of Cal-
ifornia, enclosing a copy of application to the California State Railroad Commission
requesting authority to construct grade crossings on Fernside Boulevard near its
interception with Pearl Street, at Lincoln Junction and the tracks, of the Interurban
Railway which will operate over the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Councilman
Godfrey moved that the City Manager be authorized to notify the Railroad Commission of
the approval of the application by the City Counciloseconded by Councilman Maurer and
on roll call carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Godfrey, Maurer and Pres-
ident Weichhart,(3). Noes: None. Absent: Councilmen Carrington and Morris, (2)0
18. From the Board of Education, requesting permission to move bungalows to Mastick
School property, as follows: one from Everett School, one from Longfellow School, one
from Porter School in three sections and one from Versailles School. On motion of
Councilman Maurer, seconded by Councilman Godfrey, the request was unanimously granted.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS:
'9, Mr. H. M. Bradley addressed the Council in reference to the street markings being
placed on-Central Avenue between Walnut Street and Park Avenue, indicating parallel
parking, as provided for in Ordinance No, 593, N.S., and requesting that-the enforce-
ment be suspended until certain property owners and merchants in the vicinity could
appear before the Council at the next regular meeting. The City Manager pointed out
that, while the ordinance has been in force for several months, no protests had been
filed previously, either at its introduction or since its passage. After the Mayor
had expressed the opinion, in which he was supported by the Councilman present, that
under the circumstances the ordinance should at least have a trial, it was decided
to enforce the ordinance for the next 30 days at which time a conference could be held
as to whether it should be continued in. force,
OPENING OF BIDS:
/10. A bid was received, accompanied by certified check for $15.00, from Joseph-M.
Wilson for the concession privileges in Washington Park for the period commencing July

1st, "1937, and ending September 30th, 1937, at a monthly rental of $15.00. Councilman
Godfrey moved that the bid be accepted and the Mayor be authorized tosign the contract,
seconded by Councilman Maurer and on roll call carried by the following vote: Ayes: -
Councilmen Godfrey, Maurer and President Weichhart, (3). Noes; None. Absent: Councilmen
Carrington and Morris, (2).
v/11. A bid from the Alameda Times-Star was received for official advertising from July
1st, 1937, to June 30th, 1938, for a square of 234 ems set in solid 6 point non-pariel
measurement, as follows:

Councilman Godfrey moved that the contract be awarded to the Alameda Times-Star and the
Mayor authorized to sign the contract, seconded by Councilman Maurer and on roll call
carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Godfrey, Maurer and President Weichhart
(3). Noes: None. Absent: Councilmen Carrington and Morris, (2).
REPORTS OF COMMITTEES:
/12. From the City Manager, referring to a motion passed by the Council at its regular
meeting of June 1st, requesting that the City Manager make a report to the Council, month-
ly, of the various projects and activities being undettaken under his jurisdiction, and
requesting that such reports may be filed at the second meeting of the Council of each
month. It was pointed out by the Mayor that the motion did not specify at which meeting
the report was to be filed, and that the request of the City Manager was agreeable to .
the Council.

/14. Councilman Maurer moved that the City Manager, Charles R. Schwanenberg, be authoriz-
ed to take a vacation of two weeks commencing July 2nd, 1937, and that the City Clerk,
D. Elmer Dyer, be appointed Acting City Manager during his absence, seconded by Council-
man Godfrey and on roll call carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Godfrey,
Maurer and President Weichhart, (3). Noes: None. Absent: Councilmen Carrington and Morris,

RESOLUTIONS:
COuncilman Maurer introduced and moved the adoption of

23. An itemized list of claims against the City of Alameda and the several departments
thereof in the total amounts as follows, was presented to the City Coulson: General
Departments, $1808.66; Police Department, $48,81; Fire Department, $61.73; Street De-
partment, $121.70; Health Department, 61.82; Park Department, $19.66; Golf Course
Department, $50.70; Store Department, 0291.42 East Bay Municipal Utility District
Payments Fund, $2497.38 and Gas Tax Fund #1, 24.00.
Councilman Godfrey moved, seconded by Councilman Maurer, that the claims and bills
against the City in the amounts as listed and itemized in the List of Claims filed with
the City Clerk on June 29th, 1937, and presented to the Council at this meeting be
allowed and paid. On roll call this motion carried by the following vote: Ayes:
Councilmen Godfrey, Maurer and President Weichhart, (3). Noes: None. Absent: Councilmen
Carrington and Morris, (2).
24. There being no further business to transact, the COuncil adjourned to meet in
regular session on Tuesday evening, July 6th, 1937, at 8 o'clock P.M.
