Resolution 04689RESOLUTION NO. L689 REAFFIRMINS SUPPORT OF ANY FEASIBLI-v,' P1.0GRAM THAT WILL PROVIDE ADEQUATE RELIEF FROM TRANSBAY TRAFFIC CONGESTION WHEREAS, certain officials of the City and County of San Francisco and others have from time: to time suggested that a proper solution of the Bay crossing problem would result from. the construction of two new bridges simultaneously; and WHEREAS, the critical need for relief of traffic congestion on the existing San Francisco -Oakland Bay Bridge is evidenced by the fact that 31,000,,000 vehicles will cross the bridge this year, in comparison with a total of less than 9,000,000 during its first year of operation; and WHEREAS, the economic future and development of the entire Bay area is seriously retarded., and the lives and property of transbay travelers are critically endangered by the intolerable congestion now existing on the Bridge and its approaches; and WHEREAS, all efforts to relieve that congestion have been 'blocked for a period of seven years, during which the situation has grown progressively worse; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAI EDA that the City of Alameda does hereby reaffirm its support of any feasible program that will provide adequate relief from traffic congestion and end the long-standing controversy. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Alameda hereby approves the proposal to build two new bridges at the same time, in general conformity with the proposal made by Mayor Robinson in his formal statement of November 20, 1952, such approval being given subject to a showing that it will be possible to adequately finance the simultaneous construction of said bridges. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Alameda urges as immediate action toward the accomplishment of the common objective,* 1. Unified support to the proposal of the California Toll Bridge Authority to build the system of bridge approaches approved by the Toll Bridge Authority as necessary for either or both of the proposed new crossings; 2. A thorough study by competent experts of the feasibility of financing construction of the two new bridges at the same time. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Alameda hereby affirms its willingness to cooperate wholeheartedly in any effort to accomplish these objectives.
