Resolution 13565CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 13565 SUPPORTING A MULTILATERAL APPROACH TO THE IRAQ SITUATION THAT IS PROVIDED BY THE UNITED NATIONS WHEREAS, the United Nations imposed, and Iraq agreed to, certain terms of surrender directly following its defeat in Kuwait, including identification and elimination of weapons of mass destruction, the use of which by Iraq was condemned by the United Nations; and WHEREAS, United Nations Security Council Resolution 1441 recognized Iraq's non - compliance with previous Security Council resolutions and the threat that proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and long -range missiles pose to international peace and security; and WHEREAS, Resolution 1441 obligates the government of Iraq to declare all aspects of its programs to develop chemical, biological and nuclear weapons and delivery systems and to identify all locations and work associated with its development and production facilities; and WHEREAS, military conflict could result in loss of American lives; and WHEREAS, military conflict would be extremely costly and could have a negative impact on the economy of the United States. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Alameda does hereby encourage a genuinely multilateral diplomatic approach to the Iraq situation provided by the United Nations regarding the removal of weapons of mass destruction. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council fully supports our American troops and their families, and that they are in the hearts and reflections of this Council and all citizens of Alameda. I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in a special meeting assembled on the 16th day of March, 2003, by the following vote to wit: AYES: Councilmembers Daysog, Matarrese and Mayor Johnson — 3.
